Six rules that keep you out of a bad yard
- Never quote under $35Any stop costs you the drive, the unload, and the load-up before a blade turns. A yard that can't carry the minimum is a yard that pays you to mow it.
- Price the drive, not just the grassA yard 20 minutes past your route costs you a half-hour round trip. Either add it to the number or turn it down until you have neighbors on that road.
- Add 20–35% for two weeks of growthBi-weekly grass is taller, wetter, and clumps. It is not the same job as weekly and should not be the same price.
- Charge for gates, slopes, and dog runsA push mower through a 36-inch gate, a ditch bank you can't ride, or a yard you have to walk first are all real minutes. Quote them once instead of eating them weekly.
- Raise the price before you resent the yardThe yard you dread is underpriced. Reprice it at the start of the season, in writing, or drop it — a bad account blocks a good one.
- Quote a range in person, a number in writingWalk it, give a range out loud, then send one firm number. It leaves you room to see the slope and the obstacles before you commit.
