The driving most mowers forget to log.
- Truck-and-trailer trips between job sites
- Supply runs for line, blades, fuel, and fertilizer
- Dump and disposal runs
- Trips to look at a yard for an estimate
- Trips to buy or repair equipment
Ordinary commuting generally does not count, and how the rules apply when you work from home varies. This is an estimate, not tax advice, so confirm the details with a tax professional.
Log it in a few taps, in the truck.
LawnRoute has a mileage log built in. It applies the IRS rate for each trip’s date and exports a tax summary with your income and expenses, so year-end is one download instead of a shoebox.

What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?
The IRS set the 2026 business standard mileage rate at 72.5 cents per mile from January 1, then raised it to 76 cents per mile for July 1 through December 31, 2026 because of higher fuel prices. This calculator applies the rate for each trip's date. For a year it does not cover, enter that year's rate yourself.
Can a lawn care business deduct mileage?
Driving for business, such as between job sites, to pick up supplies, to a dump or equipment shop, or to an estimate, can generally be deducted, either with actual expenses or with the standard mileage rate. Ordinary commuting generally cannot, and how that applies when your home is your workplace depends on your situation, so ask a tax professional.
What should a mileage log include?
A good log shows the date, where you went or why, and the miles for each trip. The IRS requires that you substantiate expenses with adequate records or sufficient evidence, and a log kept at the time of the trip is the easiest way to do that.
Can I use the standard mileage rate and also deduct gas and repairs?
Not for the same vehicle. The standard mileage rate is meant to cover the cost of operating the vehicle, including gas and repairs, so claiming them separately would count the same costs twice. You generally choose either the standard rate or actual expenses. The IRS says that to use the standard rate for a car you own, you generally must choose it in the first year the car is available for use in your business, and it is not allowed in some situations, such as operating five or more vehicles at the same time.
