How the math works

Every number is one you can check.

  1. Time: minutes on site plus drive and load minutes, converted to hours.
  2. Costs: paid labor (helpers, plus your own hour if you enter a wage), fuel and supplies, and an overhead share of the price.
  3. Profit: price minus those costs. Profit per hour is profit divided by the hours the stop took, drive included.
  4. Target price: the price at which profit per hour equals the number you entered.

The whole-season view multiplies visits by weeks, subtracts variable and fixed costs, and works backward to the visits a week you need for your take-home goal. The default numbers are a worked example, not an industry average.

From guesses to real numbers

Your own jobs are a better source than any calculator.

The hardest inputs to estimate are minutes and costs. LawnRoute records the time on site each time you mark a yard done, and keeps prices, expenses, mileage, and what is still owed in one place, so you can stop guessing.

Lawn care profit FAQs

Quick answers on profit.

How do I calculate profit on a lawn mowing job?

Subtract every cost of the visit from the price: paid labor (including drive time), fuel and supplies, and a share of overhead such as insurance and repairs. What is left is profit. Divide it by the hours the visit took, drive included, to get profit per hour, which is the number that tells you whether the yard is worth keeping.

What is a good profit margin for a lawn care business?

Published figures vary widely, and they depend on whether the owner's own pay is counted as a cost. Some industry sources put typical net margins in the range of roughly 5% to 20%. A solo operator who counts no wage for themselves will see a much higher margin than that, which is why profit per hour matters more than margin alone.

Should I count my own time as a cost?

Both views are useful. With your hour at $0, profit is what you keep, so compare profit per hour to what you need to earn. If you enter a wage for yourself, the margin shows how the business would look to a bank or an accountant. The calculator lets you do either.

Why does drive time count?

Because you are working, and not earning, for every minute between yards. A yard that pays $50 for 30 minutes of mowing but needs 30 more of driving earns like a $50-an-hour yard split in two. Add the drive and the load and unload time to see the real number.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. It needs no signup and runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us.
